The Party Button: Curiocity Brisbane 2021

The Party Button is a collaborative artwork by Steph Piper, Joseph Burgess, Metal Art Madness, Kobe Ouano, and Larry Banks. It is designed to surprise and delight the public through creative crosswalk traffic interfaces. It was part of the Curiocity Brisbane 2021 Exhibition held in Brisbane, Australia. Learn more about the project here.

The Party ButtonThe Party Button’ project is an interactive artwork, designed to surprise and delight the public through subverting expectations. Inspired by crosswalk traffic interfaces, it is made up of a ‘walking man’ and ‘stop man’ traffic lights and a traffic light button. This project was a collaborative work with project lead Steph Piper, sound design Joseph Burgess, metal work Metal Madness, and animation by Kobe Ouano.

When the button is pressed, the standard crosswalk ‘slow beep/fast beep’ combo is played, transitioning into one of twenty party tracks. The lights switch on, showing the traffic light characters dancing in a rainbow of LED colors. Two Party Buttons were displayed at both sides of the Goodwill Bridge, at QUT Gardens Point and Southbank during the Curiocity Exhibition in Brisbane between 12 – 28 March.

With this collaborative project, I was in charge of the pixel art animation. Once the buttons are pressed the animations play out. I created the animations with a 64x128 pixel size. The frame count for each animation sequence reached over 70 frames each.

I FEARThis zine was created for a digital design course requirement in my second year of college. The project is heavily inspired by multiple themes and sub genres of horror. I included thought provoking poems that I wrote after drawing the illustrations to further immerse the readers into the pages that I've created.

Backseat Lovers CD Cover RedesignThis project involved redesigning a CD cover for The Backseat Lovers, inspired by their indie-folk sound and the youthful nostalgia in their music. The design centers on a field of flowers, evoking memories of childhood friendships and spontaneous adventures. A retro, vintage aesthetic was chosen to enhance the theme of nostalgia.

Meateor Adobo BitesThis project was focused around creating a food packaging design to be used as hypothetical space food for astronauts. The main goal was to create visuals that stimulated the eyes and to communicate the flavor of the food with mere sight. My design highlights a Filipino delicacy to show the potential of Filipino cuisine being translated to packaged space food.

Move Through Change (MTC)The move through change advocacy campaign is a joint ventured project in collaboration with Justy Menoza, Xade Lim, Matthew Racoma, and Kobe Ouano. The campaign aims to promote sustainability through an MTC bin that awards users points that they can use to commute for free if they dispose recyclable trash in the bin.

MEKA: Lost CivilizationProject MEKA is a mockup game that is centered around the adventures of FREYA, a cybernetic android who awakens in an abandoned research facility. Only to find that the once technological world has now been reduced to ruins of destruction. This was a 3-month long individual project and was awarded "Best in Art Direction | Summa Excellentia" during the SAFAD Design Week 2024: Design Odyssey.

GAMEPLAYThe gameplay of MEKA is heavily inspired by retro action platformers like the Mega Man Zero video games, as well as combining modern roguelike games such as Astral Ascent and Blade Assault. Fast paced and intuitive, the game allows you to do smooth attack sequences while also incorporating a perfect block system that negates all damage inflicted if timed correctly.

ENVIRONMENT DESIGNThe world of MEKA is that of a lost civilization, once a thriving technological society, now broken down to ruins and destruction. In this post apocalyptic world, the environment is filled with overgrown gigantic trees that tower over destroyed buildings and lost relics.

CHARACTER DESIGN

FREYAFreya is a cybernetic android that was designed for adaptive battle. Her clothing and armor design is inspired by the early days of the Mega Man character, with minimal armor located at the ends of the arms and legs. Her color palette is skin tone with blue color tones, from dark cyan to lighter cyan, to both signify the plasma tech inside her as well as the technology of free will and freedom.

ANIMATION DESIGNFreya contains a complete set of animations, from movements like running, jumping, sliding, and dashing. To full attack sequences like punching and slashing that players can combine and create unique combinations from. And lastly hit and block animations, that players can trigger by timing the attack of the enemy to perfectly block the demage.

ICON DESIGNThe icon design for Freya's selection and dialogue initially explored an option for a secondary route. With the potential to choose a variation of Freya who grew up with the natives of the land. And instead of using plasma tech to fight, used native weapons and supernatural powers. Though this idea is still being tested and explored.

ENEMY BOSS DESIGN

GUARDIAN BEASTGuardian Beast is the first encounter and boss fight that Freya engages with. As the name suggests, this boss is a robotic beast that was designed to guard the laboratory where Freya was created. The design is inspired by a Liger Gundam, with mecha beast features and draconic teeth. The color is primarily metallic, with slight red tones to show the control of MEKA (primary antagonist) over the beast.

ENEMY BOSS ANIMATIONSGuardian Beast contains full animations for unique attack patterns like slashing, slamming, and a high damage laser beam attack. There is also a running animation for the initial chase when Freya encounters the beast.

MOCK UP TO REALITYCurrently, there is an initiative to turn the mock up into an actual game. With a small team of myself and a practicing programmer, the game is being developed at a slow but practical pace. In the near future, the game will hopefully soon be actualized and maybe then can we fully explore the world of MEKA.
